Take part in a monarch butterfly catch and release

Take part in a monarch butterfly catch and release event at PPL’s Brunner Island Wetlands from 10 a.m. to noon. Saturday, Sept. 18.

Join us as we catch, tag and release monarch butterflies to help the University of Kansas track migration patterns. The Brunner Island Environmental Preserve is a certified Monarch Butterfly Waystation, a “rest stop” for butterflies to eat on their journey between the northern locations where they reproduce and Mexico, where they spend the winter months. Bring a net if you have one.

The program, which is free and great for all ages, will take place at the Wood Duck Pavilion at PPL’s Brunner Island wetlands, off Wago Road, across from Gate A. For directions, visit www.pplweb.com/brunner+island. For more information, contact Karen Ament at (717) 284-6274 or kament@pplweb.com.

The rain date for this event is Sunday, Sept. 19.

Don't miss cars/buffalo at Northeastern fund raiser

The 2nd Annual Bobcat Foundation Car Show and Baby Buffalo Patty Drop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northeastern High School/Middle School Complex, 300 High St., Manchester.

The day features an exhibition corvette autocross, voting, dash plaques, goody bags for the first 50 entrants, door prizes, 50/50 drawings, raffles, food, vendors, road rally, and music from the Northeastern High School Marching Band at 11 a.m.

The Baby Buffalo Patty Drop will take place at 1 p.m. Three lucky winners will go home with $100, $200, or $300. The field behind Northeastern Middle School will be marked off in a series of squares. A baby buffalo will be set loose on the grid of squares at 1 p.m. As soon as she drops her “patty” the judges will look at the square in which it landed and declare a first place winner.  Members of the Northeastern High School Golf Team will hit balls into the grid to determine the other winners.  To purchase a square, call Kim Brenner-Zirkle at 266-3667 ext. 10274 or visit www.nesd.k12.pa.us. Squares will be available at the event for $5/square or 3 squares/$10. The entire York community is invited. You do not have to be present to win.

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Bobcat Foundation, which supports Northeastern School District. This non-profit organization funds academic, cultural, and athletic needs that benefit countless students of the Northeastern School District. The Bobcat Foundation is dedicated to offering students opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.

Rent-A-Kid in need of kids

The Rent-A-Kid program sponsored by the York County Area Agency on Aging is in need of kids in middle and senior high school.

Rent-A-Kid is an intergenerational program which offers students an opportunity to earn money doing routine household chores, yard work, mowing lawns, and shoveling snow for York County senior citizens.  The program also provides an opportunity for senior citizens and teenagers to interact and help each other.

Teenagers who wish to become registered must be in grades 7 through 12.  Applications are available at all school Guidance Offices or can be downloaded from the ‘Forms & Documents’ page of www.ycaaa.org.

The recommended payment by the senior citizen is $5 per hour.  However, depending on the type of work and ability of the senior citizen to pay, the teenager may negotiate a more satisfactory rate of pay.

For more information, call (717) 771-9103 or (800) 632-9073.
