The battle begins in Arcade Alpha

We would like to invite teachers and caregivers to tour Arcade Alpha, home of juniordispatch.com's video games.
Inside, you will find some quick-and-easy games suitable for any youngster.
These games have been played many times by the JD staff (Poor Amberjack is almost always bested by Gunnar), and have our whole-hearted approval. The games were selected because they're kid friendly, non-violent and often can be educational as well.

How can a teacher use Arcade Alpha's video games?
Glad you asked!
Believe it or not, some of the games that are actually educational:
  • Typing Test: A letter pops up, and the player needs to find it on the keyboard as quick as possible.
  • Map Game: This is a geography lesson in disguise as players struggle to place it on the right spot on a U.S. map.
  • Frogger, Space Invaders, Pac Man and Simon: Uhm ... how about as a history lesson on technology or the 1980s? (Yeah, we're reaching, but we know you guys are smart and can figure out a lesson plan based on it.)
Another suggestion: Contact another teacher and have a friendly competition between your two classes.
Here's how you do it:
  • You and any other interested teacher each sign up for a free login at Juniordispatch.com.
  • Give the login to your students and have them all sign in under the same login.
  • Let all the students play for a designated period of time as juniordispatch.com tallies up the high scores.
  • The winning team is crowned!
This could be a fun exercise in team work, supporting your peers and picking the right person for the right job.

What other games are there?
So far there are the seven video games mentioned above, plus Balloon Hunter, Blocks 2, Golf Hole-in-One and Pingu.
Again, each was selected for it's ease of play.
  • Balloon Hunter -- An archer fires at balloons, but has to angle his bow just right.
  • Blocks 2 -- Your standard match-the-colors-and-blocks-disappear game.
  • Golf Hole-in-One -- A short game of miniature golf.
  • Pingu -- A cartoon polar bear swats a penguin across the ice.
  • Frogger -- A frog must dodge traffic and other obstacles to get to his lilly pad.
  • Pac Man -- The arcade classic where the hero dodges ghosts in an effort to clean out a maze.
  • Space Invaders -- Defend your base from an alien invasion force.
  • Simon -- Matching game where you must copy the computer's sequence.
  • Map Game -- State maps spin down, and you must put them in the right place.
  • Typing Test -- Type the letter as it flashes on the screen.
The JD Staff is also always on the hunt for new games, so keep an eye out for additions to the list.

Of course, we welcome suggestions. Just send an e-mail to jsimcoe@yorkdispatch.com.
